A Guide to Manoa Falls on Oahu
Manoa Falls Trail
Manoa Falls is a relatively easy and family-friendly hike. This is a hike I always take new visitors too and it never disappoints. The entire trail is about 1.6 miles (2.6 km) roundtrip and will approximately take around 1.5 hours to finish. The Manoa Fall trail is very defined for the entire route and you won’t find yourself getting lost at any point, which gives you plenty of freedom to take in the beautiful scenery along the hike. Most of the trail you will be walking side by side with a small stream through the tropical forest.
The end of the trail leads to a breathtaking waterfall cascading 150 feet down the mountainside into a small pool. Although the pool at the base of the waterfall looks inviting, it is not recommended to take a swim in it as the water can make you sick from a bacteria called Leptospira. I have personally taken a swim here and I was fine, but you should be aware that this is a risk you take when jumping in! Even though you’re unable to swim at the falls, the views throughout the hike are all worth it!
How To Get There & Parking
How to get there: It takes about 10-15 minutes to drive up to the Manoa Falls entry from the Waikiki area. If you don’t have a car available you can also catch the public bus (number 5) from Ala Moana Shopping Center. The bus will drop you close to the trail entry. If you are unsure where to go you can always have the bus driver point you in the right direction or follow fellow visitors (They are all going to the same place if they took the bus all the way).
Parking: You can park at the Manoa Falls Parking lot for a small $5 fee. The parking lot does fill up throughout the day. It is, therefore, a good idea to come early. If the parking lot is full or you want to save some money on parking it is also possible to park further down in the residential area and walk back.

What else to know?
Located above the Manoa Falls trail is another hidden gem, which is L. Lyon Arboretum. Lyon Arboretum is a botanical garden that is run by the University of Hawaii. The arboretum is 194-acre in total and contains more than 5000 different plant species. The garden is used to preserve and restore Hawaii’s tropical forests and endangered plant species. The garden is gorgeous and very educational and the fresh smell of flowers makes the place worth a visit!
